Why do people engage in media piracy and cable theft?

On Behalf of | Jun 24, 2024 | Collections |

There are many different types of media piracy or theft. For instance, people will sometimes illegally stream videos or TV shows. They may download files from other users without paying for the content themselves. For those who have cable, there are forms of both active and passive cable theft.

We have already discussed how things like cable theft take place. But what is the root cause of this type of media piracy? Companies and service providers sometimes need to seek legal action to get compensation for the stolen services or to put an end to the behavior. But why is it that consumers are willing to engage in this behavior in the first place?

A variety of reasons

The truth is that there are numerous different reasons from one person to the next. Some of the most common include:

  • They are unwilling to pay, perhaps thinking that prices are too high.
  • They are unable to pay and cannot afford the services that they want to use.
  • They intend to sell the content to a third party, so they’re using it as a source of illegal income.
  • It’s not available in their area. For instance, someone may pirate a movie because it’s not available in their country on any of the streaming services.

However, perhaps the biggest reason is just that people don’t think of this type of theft the same way they do regarding physical products. So some consumers engage in piracy or cable theft because they don’t even think of it as theft at all. This creates some complex legal situations, and those involved need to be aware of the steps they can take.
